Tourist Destinations in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya the Lion's Rock






Also known as ‘Lion’s Rock’, Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin situated in almost center of Sri Lanka. Sigiriya rock is surrounded by the remains of kings age gardens, reservoirs and many other structures. Sigiriya is a very popular tourist destination also from local and foreign tourists. It is also a valuable place for historians. Sigiriya was built during the reign of King Kassapa 1 (AD 477-495). It is one of the seven World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya may have been inhabited before King Kassapa. After king Kassapas death it was a monastery up to about 14th century.
